Behn's Best Perennials, Inc.
Joseph Behn's business was literally built from the ground up--the ground being a fertile three-acre field in rural Malden Bridge, right at the edge of the southern Rensselaer County line. From these small beginnings in 1988, Behn's Best Perennials has taken root and flourished, supplying retail garden centers, landscapers, and professional gardeners with wholesale native and garden perennials, ferns, vines, ornamental grasses and groundcovers.
Today, Behn's carries more than 450 quality varieties of perennials, offering professional service, consultation, and customer care to its growing network of clients that stretch from the Capital District to the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, the Berkshires, and south to Connecticut.
"It's been labor intensive right from the start, and a lot of hard work has gone into establishing our reputation and building our business," said Mr. Behn, who followed his dream of owning a nursery after earning degrees in environmental studies, horticulture, and a plant science degree from Cornell University. "But the response to our products and our expertise has been outstanding."
Using the internet, catalogues, direct mailings, trade shows, and more, Behn's continues to connect with new clients while valuing its current customers. Every October, the Behn family (wife, Caren, and daughters Adrien, Regina, and Jessica) hosts a two-day Customer Appreciation Open House, giving tours, talking with clients, and serving B-B-Q to anyone who comes to the door. It's this kind of personalized, face-to-face service that Mr. Behn credits for the success of his business.
"Nothing replaces personal contact, two-way conversation and understanding," he said. "When we connect with someone, they take our name and reputation with them as they move from job to job. That's the best kind of advertising-a personal referral."
From the beginning 22 years ago, Behn's established an on-site recycling center which collects flats, pots and other non-biodegradeable supplies for either re-use or for shipping out to a recycling facility. Besides the obvious environmental benefits, the recycling program provides a helpful service to landscape contractors and other professionals, giving them a reason to return to the Behn's again and again.
We'll be holding the 2018 Customer Appreciation Days on October 1 and 2.
